ATV

Griswold Scout Reservation is one of only a select group of Councils across the USA to run an ATV Program. This older scout program is a blast for the participants, and we can’t wait to see you enjoy it soon!

There are no exceptions to the following conditions…

Riders must:

  • Must be at least age 14+ Submit a permission slip /waiver form – signed by a parent/guardian
  • Complete online ASI training before camp (link will be provided)
  • Pay an additional fee
  • Wear long pants, long-sleeve shirt, and ankle-covering closed-toe footwear

ASI TRAINING & TRAIL RIDE

This program features an ASI rider safety course (complete with certification), which will teach the rider all parts of the ATV, how to care for and maintain an ATV, and all rules of the road and operational techniques. Riders will be challenged to perform proper riding and control techniques on Camp Bell’s one-acre ‘terrain neutral’ course to complete the certification.

Once the ASI rider course is complete, the day culminates with a trail ride – based on the time remaining and the overall ability of the group through the many trails, roadways, and beautiful sections of the Griswold Scout Reservation.

ATV EXTENDED TRAIL RIDE

Only riders who are already ASI-certified are eligible for participation in this program.

Riders will begin their day preparing their machines and reviewing the parts, basic care, and rules of the road.

After properly reviewing, a visit to Camp Bell’s one-acre ‘terrain-neutral’ course will retest the rider’s aptitude and familiarize him/her with the machine.

Once satisfactorily prepared, the remainder of the day will feature trail riding throughout the expansive and beautiful roads, trails, and byways of Griswold Scout Reservation.

The Troop COPE/Climbing program is an opportunity for troops to participate in team building and high ropes exercises. Each troop will have the opportunity to meet with a member of the COPE staff to customize their program. Only age-appropriate elements will be open to the troop. Certain elements require scouts to be aged 14 and up.

Ecology

Griswold Scout Reservation offers endless opportunities for Scouts to explore the natural beauty of Hidden Valley. With Plan Your Own Hike, Scouts can summit Mount Shannon for stunning views, wander the Swamp to discover unique plants and wildlife, follow the scenic shoreline loop of Lake Eileen, or embark on an extended trek to Mack Ridge—all with a knowledgeable staff member guiding the adventure.

For those fascinated by the night sky, the Astronomy program invites Scouts to gaze at constellations, learn about celestial bodies, and uncover the myths behind them. Scouts can even work toward earning the Astronomy Merit Badge(with an afternoon session required) or simply enjoy an evening of stargazing.

Scouts can also give back to camp through Conservation Projects, helping maintain Griswold Scout Reservation while practicing the Outdoor Code—an opportunity that may count toward rank advancement with troop leader approval.

For a hands-on geological adventure, Boulder Exploration takes Scouts up the southwest slope of Mount Shannon, where they can climb ancient boulders and explore 10,000-year-old glacial caves. Adult leaders must be in attendance for this activity to ensure safety and supervision.

Handicraft

Scouts can tap into their creativity and teamwork with a variety of hands-on activities and fun challenges. Show off your patrol spirit with Patrol Flag Making, where teams work together to design a flag that can be proudly displayed at camp-wide assemblies.

For Scouts who want a personalized keepsake, Totem Making allows them to create a 3D monogram using Scout-approved materials. Feeling competitive? Join the Chess Tourney and see if your strategy skills can outwit other players—just be sure to protect your king!

On Monday nights, Open Handicraft offers a relaxed evening where Scouts can work on any of the above projects, complete merit badge requirements, or simply create something special. From crafting to competition, there’s something for everyone at Handicraft!

Frontier! - New Scout Program

Frontier! is specially designed for brand-new Scouts who have never been to summer camp. Each day follows the format of an ideal Troop meeting, where Scouts are grouped into mixed-Troop patrols, forming the “Frontier Troop.” Together, they elect Patrol Leaders, create patrol flags, and build teamwork through fun and engaging activities.

The program focuses on teaching essential outdoor and Scouting skills, encouraging Troops to review and reinforce what Scouts learn during and after camp. Scouts should come prepared each day with a water bottle, rain gear, and other essentials in a daypack.

The week concludes with an exciting 5-mile hike on Friday, where Scouts put their new skills to the test. The hike features a trail lunch, a mountain summit, a trek through a secluded swamp, and a tour of the Reservation—including a visit to Camp Bell.

Frontier! is a memorable adventure that sets new Scouts on the path to success in Scouting!
