Volunteer Background Mandatory Re-Checks

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is committed first and foremost to keeping youth safe. Part of that commitment includes continually updating our youth protection policies to help ensure we are always on the forefront of youth safety.

Since 2003, background checks have been conducted on every new adult when they apply to register, and in 2008 a background check was conducted on all currently registered adults. In 2020, the BSA will implement periodic criminal background checks on a five-year basis. The first periodic recheck will take place next January.

In preparation for this, the required disclosures and authorization documents are being updated to ensure compliance with current local, state, and federal laws.

Throughout the fall, all currently registered adults who have a valid email address listed in their ScoutNET person profile will receive periodic reminder emails that include these forms. Those documents are: (1) the Background Check Disclosure; and (2) the Additional Disclosures & Background Check Authorization.

All currently registered adults need to receive each of these documents. Please help us spread the word, and make sure each registered adult volunteer receives copies. A new, signed authorization form is required before annual registration will be processed. Note: These two items must be provided as separate documents (i.e., not stapled or otherwise attached to one another).

A new, signed Additional Disclosures & Background Check Authorization form must be collected before any adult’s annual registration is processed during rechartering.

Please complete the process listed below at your earliest availability to help us continue to provide the safest environment possible for our Scouts and leaders. Please note that these steps must be completed before your 2020 annual registration can be processed.

  1. Review the two separate disclosure documents linked below that are being provided to you separately for your review.
  2. Once you have reviewed them, print the separate document titled “Additional Disclosures & Background Check Authorization.” Review the additional disclosures on that form, then complete and sign the Authorization using an ink/wet signature. Note: A print signature is required for this document. Electronic signatures will not be accepted.
  3. Turn in the signed “Additional Disclosures & Background Check Authorization” form promptly to your unit leader or to the Daniel Webster Council Service Center.

If you choose to decline the background check, or if you do not complete the Additional Disclosures & Background Check Authorization form and return it to your unit leader or to the Daniel Webster Council Service Center, your 2020 annual registration will not be processed.

Units should have all of their background check documentation prepared for Recharter Day on Saturday, December 7th.
