The ideal arrangement of the range staff is one Rangemaster and one assistant staff for every six scouts in the shooting line. The primary responsibility of the Rangemaster is not to coach scouts while scouts are shooting. As we know the Rangemaster is a Rangemaster who runs the shooting class for safety. Safety is everything in all shooting sports.
I observed senior scouts in the range often gave scouts advice from their own experience. Their instructions were not always correct and ignored key points scouts must learn to shoot properly. Assistant archery staff do not need to be good archers themselves but follow the established steps of shooting. It is essential to train senior scouts by providing coaching knowledge before assisting the Rangemaster at various council-led archery programs.
