Welcome to Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training. The Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) course builds and expands on the concepts and themes introduced in Scoutmaster Position-Specific Training and Varsity Coach Position-Specific Training, and provides Scouters with the confidence to take youth into the outdoors. Specifically, this hands-on program gives adult leaders a practical introduction to the patrol method of a boy-led troop by teaching many of the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. In addition, the teaching methods, activities, and games model the variety of teaching used in effective and engaging Scouting programs.
This hands-on course covers basic outdoor skills, including wood tools, ropes and lashings, nature identification, Leave No Trace, cooking, camp set-up, fire building, map and compass, hiking, flags, and campfire programs. It will prepare you to teach all the outdoor requirements through First Class.
Cost: $30/person includes course materials, lunch, supper, and cracker barrel on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. Wear your uniform and bring your own tent, sleeping gear, water bottle, chair, cup, plate, eating utensils, and basic camping gear.
